GIVING SPACE TO STORE LOSS 2017
Responses to the Natural Disasters

Within this series of video sculptures, Koym-Murteira seeks to engage people who might have had their sense of home disrupted/destroyed. To create a meeting of virtual and physical space, she places video screens behind mason jars filled with water. The placement of the image behind water acts as a lens. As you walk around the sculpture the three-dimensionality of the bottle, water, and image lends an additional sense of movement and wonder. The bottles store precious memories, life’s seminal moments and challenges to be used when someone needs to call on them.
These sculptures will be brought together with works from other artists at the Museums of Sonoma for a show in the Fall of 2018. Koym-Murteira is interested in housing stories from the fires that people would like to share with others as they process the experience. The Museum will act as both a gallery and a gathering place.
